Sauvignon Blanc

Bright and crisp, this wine is made in a Loire style with no oak influence. Aromas of lemon peel and melon and grapefruit are backed by a hint of fresh cut hay. The flavors are of lemongrass, citrus and melon balanced by racy acids and a fresh finish. This wine would go well with most seafood dishes as well as stir-frys, Thai and Japanese food.

The Fume has been awarded best white wine by at least one Sierra Foothill competition in 2006, 2007, & 2008, and a gold medal every year since 2006 plus a gold medal at Orange County in 2008. It was awarded best white wine at all three Sierra Foothill competitions in 2007. The 2009 vintage is not to be out done since it has two Gold medals and a best of class to its credit. The 2010 has only one gold medal. This is the same wine as our Fume Blanc of the years since 1977 when we made our first wine from Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

Chardonnay, Own rooted old vine
A completely different Chardonnay than most consumers are accustomed to, this wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and so has natural Chardonnay fruity character unadulterated by wood and malolactic fermentation. Light straw in color with aromas of green apple, pineapple and citrus, in the mouth the flavors open with lemon and grapefruit followed by pear and pineapple with a crisp finish. It comes from vines planted in 1982 on their own roots so that qualifies them to be considered "old". The benefit of having old vines is that the vines produce more concentated fruit as they age giving the wines more complex concentrated character to be enjoyed.

Barrel-Fermented Chardonnay
This wine is in the traditional California Chardonnay style. With lovely aromas of pineapple, citrus, vanilla and notes of butter, this wine fills your mouth with luscious fruit and a lingering finish. Great with seafood dishes, roast chicken with herbs and pork tenderloin grilled with a mustard glaze. Twelve months in 40% new french oak Gives this wine a lovely blending of the concentrated Chardonnay fruit from our 30 year old vines and elegant oak flavors. I can't stop at one glass. JMM

Roussanne

This wine is in the traditional California Chardonnay style. Aromatic with notes of melon, quince, citrus and mineral. The mouthfeel is creamy, enhanced by partial malolactic fermentation with flavors of stone fruits, melon, flint and honey. This is a very different white wine from the others we produce, with rich aromas and mouthfeel but a crisp finish. Great with seafood dishes, roast chicken with herbs and pork tenderloin grilled with a mustard glaze. The grape is relatively new to the US being imported from the Northern Rhone Valley of France and rivals Chardonnay in winestyle. However it is hard to grow but it is worth it. Sold only at the winery or from the web site.

Viognier

The grapes from which this wine is made originate in the Condrieu appellation of the Northern Rhone Valley of France.  The grapes are very delicate and should be grown in a cool climate with little new oak ageing, otherwise it will taste like a poor Chardonnay.

In the glass the wine is a medium straw color with lovely fragrances of honeysuckle, rose petals and citrus blossoms. In the mouth the flavors of peaches and apricots are balanced with a rich texture and a bright level of acidity. The Viognier pairs wonderfully with seafood and poultry dishes and the rich flavors in the mid-palate enable this wine to complement spicy Asian dishes, such as Thai curry, especially well.

Syrah, Ancient Vine Reserve
In the glass, this is a dark purple wine with rich hues of garnet and plum. The aromas are of spices and leather with hints of black fruits and clove. In the mouth, the tannins open to layers of rich spice and bold fruit. It is now estate bottled and come from the oldest Syrah vineyard planted in the Sierra Foothill apppellation and therefore the El Dorado AVA. It is a blend of three clones to give it complexity, depth of color with hints of blueberry and blackberry flavors.

Fleur de Montagne
John MacCready, the first president of the Rhone Rangers was making Rhone blends years before the RR was started, always with the goal of making the food friendly wines. Sierra Vista now has two distinctly different Rhone blends. One is the Fleur de Montagne patterned after the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This is one of our flagship wines that is always a delightful rendition of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault.

Grenache
Grenache, Estate Rayas Vineyard

The vines growing the grapes are said to have indirectly come from the Chateau Rayas Vineyard in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape AVA in the southern Rhone Valley of France. We have been growing Grenache since the late 1980's and using it as a blending varietal in our Fleur de Montagne. Now that we have this Rayas block we are offering it as a varietal. It is a lovely ruby color with very characteristic aromas of black cherry, raspberry and strawberry fruit, spice cake and a hint of pepper. It is great with many different dishes such as barbecued chicken, Korean barbecued beef, or stuffed pork tenderloin. If you have never tried Grenache ours can be very much like a Good fruity Pinot Noir: very silky and smooth in your mouth.

Grenache Rose
Our rose typically has a rose petal red color with aromas of strawberry/raspberry with a hint of rose. The taste is dominated by strawberries and raspberries with a hint of pomegranate. It has a clean long finish and is great by itself around a pool or at a picnic. Serve with barbequed chicken, fish and hamburgers.

Merlot Mountain Ridge Reserve
This wine islovely, soft, and fruity with dramatic berry flavors. We have three of the better Merlot clones in the estate, hillside vineyard that add complexity and finesse. Older oak cooperage is used to moderate oak influence. This is a versatile wine with many nuances to go with a variety of moderately seasoned foods including duck, lamb and pork entrees or try it with herb-roasted or barbecued chicken and of course hamburgers.

Mourvedre
Mourvedre produces exciting wines, particularly when blended with the fruitiness of Grenache and the spiciness of Syrah as we do here at Sierra Vista. Our great microclimate for Rhone style wines produces Mourvedre with luscious black fruits, soft and delicate tannins, and mouth-filling charm with layers of complexity including faint clove, briars, and sage. Mourvedre can improve for up to 10 years when stored properly.

Red Rock Ridge Syrah
The Red Rock Ridge Syrah is very reminiscent of a Cote Rotie. Deep purple in color with a wonderful bouquet of red berry and violets, the ripe, juicy raspberry and cherry flavors marry well with hints of oak and medium tannins. This wine will age nicely over the next 6 to 12 years. Our flagship Syrah.

Zinfandel, Reeves Vineyard
In the glass the wine is dark purple in color with lovely aromas of black pepper, raspberry and cherry. A very full, rich wine with an initial sweetness as the fruit opens with raspberry, blackberry, black cherry, pepper and anise. There are soft tannins that will enable the wine to improve over the next 4-6 years.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Ancient Vine Reserve
In the glass, our Cabernet Sauvignon is rich burgundy in color with tints of indigo. The aromas are of black cherry, briar, cassis and spicy cedar. In the mouth, the wine opens with bright berry fruit followed by a full, round mid-palate. The finish lingers with rich notes of chocolate and cherry. We try to introduce enough new oak to add to the complexity without overpowering the fruit. Tasting our older Cabernets has proven that our vineyard consistently produces wines that live ten or more years with proper storage. We consider this our entry level offering.
