As wine tasting hosts, we hear it all the time, “I prefer red in the winter and white in the summer”, and we feel the same way! Who wants to drink a room temperature wine when the temperature outside is decidedly above room temperature? Well, turns out there is another solution for red wine lovers in this heat.
Introducing “The New Summer Red”, chilled grenache. This is not a new concept in the world of wine, but something that Tracy our manager recently discovered and we LOVE it.
Among the most planted varietals in the world, this beautiful wine is a light garnet color in the glass and has a tart red fruit flavor. We have always enjoyed our Grenache 2020 at Sierra Vista Winery at room temperature, but we have a sneaking suspicion that it will be even more popular chilled.
What to do: place a bottle of our Grenache 2020 in your fridge for at least thirty minutes or until the temperature of the wine reaches 55°F – 60°F, uncork, and enjoy! We find this wine to be as refreshing as a white wine, but with all the big lovely flavors of a red.
Differences we found when sampling both:
- Grenache at room temperature has a stronger presence of alcohol. When chilled, that flavor mellows into a silky-smooth finish.
- Chilling Grenache enhances the notes in the wine, so you taste more tart cherry, spicy cinnamon, and subtle white pepper with slight herbal notes.
Pleasantly cool and refreshing, we found this to be a new favorite with both staff and guests alike!
We are now keeping a few bottles of Grenache in our wine fridge, come by and try a taste, a glass, or even a bottle with us.
